Student Gallery - Shropshire Tutor

If you want to know about us, why not ask our children?

We have asked our students to let us know what they think about their tutor and their learning experience. They have been given the power of the pen to review us and how we help them learn, either on – line or face to face

In return we are going to review our students and award a student of the term from each tutor to include one to one and groups

At the end of each year tutors will award a student of the year taken from all the students given a termly award.

Every year I have the difficult task of choosing a student of the year.

This year I am awarding student of the year to Miss Selina Donnelly. She is an avid reader and her vocabulary skills are fantastic. Her passion for reading is an impetus in her reading comprehension skills and interesting vocabulary choices incorporating a range of synonyms and antonyms into her work.

When I first met Selina (over zoom) 12 months ago she really lacked confidence in her own abilities- particularly in maths as she was working at a year 3 level, and thanks to covid had lots of gaps in her learning.

Now, most tutors claim after 4 weeks they know if someone will be able to sit the 11 Plus. I disagree.

I’ve had the pleasure of teaching Selina for 12 months and her improvement in maths has been phenomenal. She is now working at a year 5/6 level where she should be.

Instead of focusing on what she could not do, we focused on what she could do and built on this. Despite being on zoom, we can still make the leap from abstract to concrete using paper plates for clocks, fruit and veg for Algebra, pasta shapes for tens and ones-the list is endless.

At times there have been lots of tears of frustration and one incident where she totally ignored me and refused to do her session. But, this is all a natural part of the learning process.

However, there have been lots of smiles along the way too. And, I even taught one maths lesson in French, to engage her!

Most importantly, this young lady came out of the 11 Plus exam with her head held high, smiling, giggling, and  recounting the questions and saying she enjoyed it!

Regardless, of the result this young lady is now bursting with confidence and maths is no longer her “arch enemy” as she puts it.

 I’m really proud of her.

Congratulations Selina on being our 2022-2023 Student of the year.

Book reviews

We have been asking our students to review the books they are reading and we can then share them for others to read.

Here is Jessica’s review of The Boy Who Fooled The World.
