Just a little update from Shropshire Tutor HQ!

What can we offer?

Support from EYFS up to A Level

Currently, we are running weekly zoom sessions for current year 5 children, sitting the 11 Plus in September, which at present is still going ahead o the set date. The zoom sessions we run take place Saturdays 2-4pm. We use the CGP CEM materials and Practice test papers. Papers are sat at home under test conditions, then we discuss, mark and correct and extend and confirm learning in the sessions. Papers and books would need to be purchased before hand. The sessions are led by the children who have sat the paper and concepts they would like to revise. Sessions can be a pay as you go, on a weekly basis.

At present, we are unable to initiate any mocks or lessons on a face to face basis. And, we don’t envisage this happening until at least October half-term. So, if you would like a slot with us, or have frozen your slot please contact us as soon as possible if you would like sessions via zoom.

For current year 4, going into year 5 in September, registers are now open and we are taking bookings as this prep will commence via zoom starting August. We will be using the CGP CEM books via zoom and setting homework tasks.

Myself, and 3 other teachers are currently teaching via zoom. Our little learner lessons for nursery are currently being taught via zoom for Pre-Schoolers ABC Day Nursery Ltd Smiley Faces Day Nursery Tortoise Nursery and Little Owls Nursery

We are also delivering CPD in maths and letters and sounds for local and now international nurseries. in August, we are running parent courses and coursed for child minders.

We have just employed a fantastic teacher who will be joining our team from November. She is already busy preparing lessons and packs to support home study.

We will be looking to appoint a Shrewsbury and Newport based teacher too, to meet current demand and our waiting list.

We have created home study packs for EYFS up to year 6, focused on a broad and balance curriculum, and end of year objectives for each of the year groups.

We have just set up a year 8 weekly zoom class focusing on English, and maths-but being delivered through art, doodling and drawing and pictorial work in maths. This week we had children attend from three different Secondary schools.

We are intending to set up weekly groups for years 5, 6 and 7 where we will focus on English and maths skills/ Plus, other year groups if requested.

We are here to help, if you have any questions please ask, either by phone or our website.

Key Stage 2 SATs Reform: Changes are coming to the SAT exams for Year 6 students https://www.shropshiretutor.co.uk/key-stage-2-sats-reform-changes-are-coming-to-the-sat-exams-for-year-6-students/ https://www.shropshiretutor.co.uk/key-stage-2-sats-reform-changes-are-coming-to-the-sat-exams-for-year-6-students/#respond Mon, 11 Jan 2016 14:50:02 +0000 http://www.shropshiretutor.co.uk/?p=1117 We have previously published that from May 2016, the KS2 exams are having an overhaul, and we have detailed what each student should typically expect on our SATs page. We have previously published that from May 2016, the KS2 exams are having an overhaul, and we have detailed what each student should typically expect on our SATs page.

Have you also heard that many secondary schools are planning to use the results from SATs to place children in sets? Don’t panic, there is still plenty of time to help your child prepare and ensure they get off to the best possible start at secondary school.

In summary, the changes being introduced are:

Reading Test

The reading test will be a single paper with questions based on three passages of text. Your child will have one hour, including reading time, to complete the test.

Spelling, Grammar & Punctuation (SPAG) Tests

The spelling, grammar and punctuation tests will consist of two parts; a grammar and punctuation paper requiring short answers, lasting 45 minutes, and an aural spelling test of 20 words, lasting around 15 minutes.

3 Separate Maths Papers in Arithmetic and Reasoning

Paper 1 will consist of fixed response questions, where children have to give the correct answer to calculations, including long multiplication and division. Papers 2 and 3 will involve a number of queston types, including multiple choice and constrained questions.

Science

Not all children in Year 6 will take science SATs. However, a number of schools will be required to take part in a science sampling. For those school selected, students will take three papers; Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

The tests are wide-ranging which will require a good understanding and are in a brand new format for 2016.

Here’s what you can do next:

1. Stay in touch with the changes that we will post

2. Book a place on one of our SATs preparation courses at Telford or Shrewsbury

So if you want to help boost your child’s confidence walking into those SAT exams, it’s not too late. Our weekly SATs lessons will help prepare students for the tests, and are a fun and very interactive way of ensuring your child is prepared, smiling and ready.

A bit of an emotional night last night! 3 years ago, this young man was our first ever pupil! We have shared so many giggles, tears, stories and salt and vinegar crisps, over that time.

Thomas is now exceeding in all of his targets and has grown so much in confidence. Thus, it’s time to say goodbye!

Thank you to such a hard-working, hilarious and confident young man.

The Parent Portal is your one-stop-shop to help you keep track of your child’s lessons and your account balance with us. We have partnered with a company called TutorCruncher to provide an online lesson scheduling and automated billing solution for our customers to help you monitor yours and your child’s account with us.

We have introduced the system due to the increasing number of new customers and to introduce other payment methods to satisfy a broader customer base; it also helps us track where our tutors need to be and (hopefully) reduce our administration time.

The system sends out automated email reminders when your account balance falls below a threshold limit that we set, ensuring that your account balance is kept in credit, and each month it will send out an invoice to summarise what payments have been credited and debited from your account.

We hope the system provides benefit to you and you don’t feel overwhelmed by it. Any queries you have, please do let us know as someone else may be thinking the same, and we can provide a further ‘How to’ video or add a FAQ.

Yipee! We’ve been nominated for, not one but two, Shropshire business awards and with Christmas just around the corner we really couldn’t have asked for a more exciting present – even if it is a little early!

We’ve been nominated in the Businesses for Children Awards 2016 in two categories – Supportive Business for Children and Young People and Educational Business for Young People.

We would really like to say a huge thank you to all those people who took the time to put us forward and fill out the nomination papers, we really appreciate it.

With so many wonderful businesses in Shropshire providing exceptional services to children and young people we feel very proud and humbled to be considered worthy of an award.

2015 has been an exceptionally busy year for us and our most successful since launching three years ago so we couldn’t be any more excited.

We have great plans for 2016 and winning an award would be the icing on the cake.

For now though, all we can do is wait and see if we make the judge’s shortlist!
